The stock market has experienced seven major periods of panic and decline over the last 25 years. Each decline came with its own “reasons” to sell and get out. Yet, despite these drawdowns, the market has always bounced back, rewarding those who stayed disciplined and invested.

These periods of panic are a normal part of long-term investing. The causes varied, but the outcome was the same: the crisis passed, and stocks continued to march forward.

Here are the seven major market panics since the year 2000, including how long each drawdown lasted:

  • Dot-Com Bubble (2000-2002): A 49% decline that lasted 929 days. This was driven by the collapse of tech stocks, accounting fraud, and the 9/11 attacks.
  • Global Financial Crisis (2007-2009): A 56.8% drop that lasted 517 days. This was caused by the implosion of the housing market and a severe recession.
  • European Debt Crisis (2011): A 19.4% decline that lasted 157 days. This was amid fears of the Euro’s collapse and a debt ceiling crisis in the U.S.
  • The Christmas Eve Massacre (2018): A 19.8% dip that lasted 95 days. This was fueled by trade war tensions and rising interest rates.
  • COVID Pandemic (2020): A rapid 33.9% crash that lasted 33 days. This happened as the world shut down.
  • Inflation Spike (2022): A 25.4% decline that lasted 282 days. This was as inflation soared, and the Federal Reserve began its fastest rate-hiking cycle in history.
  • The Tariff Meltdown (2025): An 18.9% decline that lasted 48 days.
